Trauma, Nurturing Healing & Hope
We offer a safe and compassionate space for teens to process their experience, learn coping skills, and heal with our virtual IOP for trauma in Colorado.
What is Trauma?
Trauma occurs after an event that threatens an individual’s sense of safety and may be life-threatening, leading to a process of healing and recovery from a state of heightened arousal. A broad spectrum of emotions and behaviors is typical following a stressful event. However, persistent symptoms or repeated exposure to trauma can lead to long-term detrimental effects that necessitate treatment. A teen with post-traumatic stress may experience persistent, intrusive thoughts of the event, nightmares, sleep disturbances, flashbacks, avoidance of reminders, hypervigilance, hyperarousal, irritability, anger, memory and concentration issues, isolation, and feelings of numbness or guilt and sadness.
How Do We Treat Trauma?
Effective treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder include trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive processing therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy. These therapies aid individuals in processing and altering their perceptions and emotions related to the trauma. They also help construct a narrative that fosters a more positive and adaptive view of themselves and the world. Teens learn to regulate emotions healthily and manage the effects of trauma. Treatment integrates peer support to validate the teen’s experiences, enhancing their social connectedness and support.
What Are the Challenges of Treating Trauma?
Treating trauma involves gradual exposure to the traumatic event and its reminders, which is essential for processing and coping with the trauma. This approach can initially evoke distressing emotions and thoughts, which might discourage the individual from continuing, leaving the trauma unresolved. Providing psychoeducation about the treatment process helps the individual understand the purpose and procedures of treatment, facilitating better engagement and outcomes.
